                                      Equine Parasites

Resistance in equine parasites to current anthelmintics is becoming a growing problem. In the adult horse today, the parasites of most concern are the cyathostomes (small strongyles), followed by tapeworms and bots. The following protocol is suggested for adult horses only.  Please ask your veterinarian for advice on deworming younger horses (less than 1 year) or pregnant mares.

                                                 Sample Deworming Protocol

January  - fenbendazole (Panacur, Safe-Guard) or oxibendazole (Anthelcide EQ)

April - fecal sample, moxidectin/praziquantel (Quest Plus)

July - moxidectin (Quest)

October (or after 1st killing frost) - fecal sample, ivermectin/praziquantel (Zimectrin Gold, Equimax)

Tips for collecting fecal samples:

1. Take a sample from manure that you observe the horse passing or have your veterinarian take a sample during a visit.

2. Immediately refrigerate the sample and get it to the clinic within 24 hours of sampling.
