EQUINE VACCINATIONS:

Jennifer Lowry, DVM *Spring 2012*

The following information is written to address what vaccines your horse should receive and when they should be given.  A specific vaccine plan can be made for each horse after a veterinary consult.  Please refer to the Pine Bush Equine website for an explanation of these diseases.

Important factors to consider are:

Travel- Does the horse ever leave the farm?  Is there frequent movement of other horses on and off the farm?

Location- Are there bodies of water nearby?  Swamp land with snails and aquatic insects?

“Core vaccines” are the minimum any horse should receive as they protect against diseases spread by environmental factors such as insects, soil, and wild animals.

Spring Core Vaccines: (April-May before peak mosquito season)

Rabies

West Nile Virus

4-way: one vaccine that includes Eastern and Western Equine Encephalitis, Tetanus

(also includes Influenza which IS transmitted horse to horse)

Spring Risk-Based Vaccines:

Recommended if the horse is exposed to other horses from travel or horses coming in from other farms.

Rhino

Strangles

Early June:  (before aquatic insects hatch)

Potomac Horse Fever is highly recommended if the farm is near bodies of water or swamp-type land.  For high-risk areas, it is best to administer this vaccine in early June for peak immunity during exposure times (mid-summer through early fall).

Fall:  (September-October)

4-way

Rhino

*May also booster for West Nile if there is prolonged warm weather and flooding to promote mosquito development.
